LAWAS – The Lawas District Commercial Crime Investigation Division (BSJKD) organised a community outreach programme on 27 April 2026 to strengthen public awareness of commercial crime.
The initiative, known as the “Meet & Greet” programme, was conducted in the town centre between 10.00am and 11.45am.
The session was led by Sergeant Kho Beng Lay and Constable Mohd Syarisham bin Ahmad, with 20 participants from diverse backgrounds taking part.
During the programme, officers shared information on the latest commercial crime trends, highlighting the increasing sophistication of scams targeting the public.
Residents were briefed on the role of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), which operates through the 997 hotline, and were encouraged to use the service to report suspicious activities.
The public was also introduced to the Whoscall application, a tool designed to help users identify unknown numbers and block potential scam calls.
In addition, participants were provided with access to the Commercial Crime E-Book, a resource aimed at educating communities on preventive measures and safe practices.
Officials noted that the programme was well received, with attendees expressing appreciation for the practical advice and guidance offered.
The event forms part of ongoing efforts by BSJKD to engage directly with communities and ensure that residents are equipped with the knowledge to protect themselves against fraud.
Commercial crime remains a growing concern across Malaysia, with cases involving online scams, investment fraud and identity theft frequently reported.
Authorities have stressed the importance of public vigilance, particularly as criminals increasingly exploit digital platforms to target victims.
Community engagement programmes such as the one in Lawas are seen as vital in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public.
By providing accessible information and encouraging dialogue, police aim to build trust and empower residents to take proactive steps in safeguarding themselves.
