BINTULU – The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak successfully organised an environmental awareness programme with the community of Jepak, Bintulu, on 30 April 2026 at the Jepak Village Community Hall.
The initiative aimed to enhance public knowledge, foster awareness, and strengthen cooperation between government agencies, educational institutions, local communities, and stakeholders.
The opening ceremony was officiated by YB Encik Iskandar bin Turkee, State Assemblyman for N.67 Jepak. Also present was YBhg. Datu Jack Anak Liam, Controller of Environmental Quality Sarawak, underscored the importance of community involvement in environmental protection.
Throughout the programme, participants engaged in a series of informative sessions. NREB delivered a talk emphasising shared responsibility in tackling issues such as open burning, peatland fires, and the adoption of circular economy practices.
The Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department provided demonstrations on bushfire extinguishing techniques, while Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus presented a session titled “Kitar Now”, focusing on recycling and sustainable practices.
Sarawak Energy Berhad contributed with a partnership talk on “Fire and Line Transmission”, highlighting the link between energy infrastructure and fire prevention.
The event also featured community-focused activities, including a Rahmah sale organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDNHEP) and a used cooking oil purchase programme by Green Town Eco Sdn. Bhd. A lucky draw added to the lively atmosphere, encouraging greater participation from local residents.
The programme was supported by the Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources (MUDENR) and the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEEsty), in collaboration with the Bintulu Resident’s Office, Bintulu District Office, KPDNHEP Bintulu, and the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department.
Strategic partners included HHA Associates, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Green Town Eco Sdn. Bhd., and Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus.
By combining educational talks, practical demonstrations, and community activities, the programme highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment.
It reinforced the role of local communities in supporting Sarawak’s broader sustainability agenda, particularly in addressing challenges such as peatland fires and waste management.
The Jepak initiative reflects Sarawak’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness at the grassroots level, ensuring that communities are empowered with knowledge and practical tools to contribute to ecological sustainability.
