KUCHING – In line with Malaysia’s ambition to enhance its global standing in education, Sarawak has intensified efforts to prepare students for international benchmarking assessments such as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM).
These assessments are widely recognised as indicators of a nation’s educational effectiveness, measuring student achievement in literacy, mathematics, science, and problem-solving. Sarawak’s proactive role is seen as vital in supporting Malaysia’s performance on the international stage.
Over the years, the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS) has consistently prioritised the development of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), literacy, and analytical abilities among students.
This approach not only aligns with national aspirations but also equips Sarawakian students with the skills needed to compete globally.
As part of preparations for TIMSS 2027, PISA 2029, and SEA-PLM 2029, JPNS has established the Strategic Planning Committee for International Benchmarking Achievement (JPSPPA).
The committee oversees initiatives such as HOTS engagement sessions with district education offices, the creation of the Kenyalang HOTS Exploration Module for reading and literacy, and the “Bedurok Bejalai” mentoring programme, which brings targeted support directly to schools.
At the classroom level, teachers are adopting project-based and problem-solving approaches to strengthen students’ readiness for computer-based international assessments.
Students are also exposed to training materials from the Curriculum Development Division (BPK), Ministry of Education Malaysia, ensuring familiarity with the format and expectations of TIMSS, PISA, and SEA-PLM.
The workshops and mentoring programmes emphasise digital skills, preparing students for assessments that increasingly rely on technology.
By bridging competency gaps between urban and rural schools, Sarawak aims to ensure equitable access to quality education and digital literacy.
These initiatives are designed to produce a generation of critical thinkers and creative problem-solvers. The emphasis on HOTS and digital readiness reflects Sarawak’s commitment to nurturing globally competitive students who can thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Education leaders in Sarawak have reiterated that these efforts are not only about achieving higher scores but also about cultivating innovation, resilience, and adaptability among students.
The long-term vision is to position Sarawak as a strategic contributor to Malaysia’s international education performance, while empowering local communities through knowledge and skills.
