KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has officially opened applications for the 2026–2028 term of the Kuching South Child Council (KSCC), reaffirming its commitment to youth participation under the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng made the announcement during a press conference, highlighting the Council’s dedication to creating a city that respects, protects, and fulfils the rights of children.
He noted that MBKS is the first city in Sarawak to achieve candidate city status under the CFCI, a recognition of its efforts to empower young voices in shaping community development.
Dato Wee expressed gratitude to the outgoing KSCC members, who have served since 2024. He commended their contributions to dialogues, community programmes, environmental campaigns, leadership activities, and awareness initiatives.
Their involvement, he said, has demonstrated that children can play a meaningful role in driving positive social change and helping MBKS better understand issues affecting young people.
The new Child Council will comprise 30 members aged between 12 and 16, representing seven zones in Kuching South. Special quota seats will be reserved for children from vulnerable and under-represented groups, ensuring diversity and inclusivity.
Dato Wee stressed that the Council is not limited to academically outstanding students or school leaders but will reflect a broad spectrum of backgrounds, talents, and experiences, including children with disabilities and those from welfare-supported institutions.
Applicants must meet several criteria: they must reside or study within Kuching South, be aged 12–16, secure parental or guardian consent, show interest in community and child-related issues, and maintain good disciplinary records.
Members will serve a two-year term, with the possibility of reappointment based on performance. Attendance of at least 70% of meetings and programmes is required to remain active.
The recruitment process will involve publicity through MBKS’s official website and Facebook page. Applications endorsed by schools and parents will be screened by the secretariat, followed by interviews and group assessments conducted by the selection panel.
Final appointments will be reviewed by the CFCI Committee and endorsed by the Full Council before induction.
Application forms are available at the MBKS website https://mbks.sarawak.gov.my or at the Information Counter, MBKS, Jalan Padungan.
Completed forms must be submitted by 4.00pm on 28 May 2026 to the Public Relations and Corporate Development Unit, 3rd Floor, MBKS, Jalan Padungan, or emailed to request@mbks.gov.my.
MBKS encourages eligible children to apply, emphasising that the Child Council is a platform for shaping a safer, healthier, and more inclusive city for future generations.
