Sarawak’s Ambitious Infrastructure Plans

In a bid to transform Sarawak into a key aviation and shipping hub in the region, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has unveiled plans for the development of a new international airport and a deep sea port in Kuching.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Innocement Sdn Bhd and PMW Industries Sdn Bhd, Abang Johari emphasized the strategic importance of these infrastructures.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Strategic Location

The Premier highlighted that both projects would be equipped with state-of-the-art Information Technology (IT) facilities, taking inspiration from international benchmarks such as the airport in Doha, Qatar.

“The location of these two projects are strategic so that Sarawak can become a hub in Western part of Borneo as we are in the middle of economic traffic; shipping and flights between the West and the region,” he stated.

Catalyst for Economic Development

Abang Johari expressed confidence that the development of these infrastructures would serve as catalysts for economic growth, particularly in terms of enhancing connectivity and boosting tourism.

“These projects will give economic development beyond 2030 – a new airport and a seaport,” he affirmed.

Expert Oversight and Future Projections

Acknowledging the complexity of these undertakings, the Premier revealed that a team of experts has been appointed to oversee the development plans for both the airport and deep sea port.

He estimated that the planning phase for these projects would span between two to three years before estimations can be made for their execution.

Towards a Technologically Advanced Future

Abang Johari also emphasized the integration of cutting-edge IT amenities into these infrastructures, envisioning a seamless experience for travelers and port users alike.

“With the state-of-the-art airport, tourists can simply check-in using the latest IT amenities. The same goes for the new port, which will be utilizing the latest IT amenities, so this is the new way of doing things,” he concluded.
