KUCHING – A groundbreaking ceremony was held today for the Kuching Nanyang Overseas Chinese Mechanics Memorial, a project designed to honour the sacrifices of overseas Chinese mechanics who journeyed to Borneo during times of conflict.
The memorial, themed Across Mountains and Rivers, Building Shared Memories, is envisioned as more than a physical structure.
It will serve as a cultural and educational landmark, offering future generations a chance to learn about courage, sacrifice, and unity outside the confines of textbooks.
The ceremony highlighted the historical significance of the mechanics who crossed oceans not for wealth or recognition, but to safeguard hope and the future.
Symbolism is central to the memorial’s design: red represents sacrifice and bloodshed, while yellow embodies hope and peace.
Organisers explained that the monument will stand as a reminder by day and shine as a beacon by night, ensuring that the memory of those who gave their lives will never fade.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, speaking at the event, emphasised that a city’s greatness is not measured solely by its infrastructure but also by its ability to remember those who sacrificed for its people.
He expressed hope that the memorial would become a platform for young people to understand history and embrace the values of peace and unity.
The project also reflects Kuching’s broader cultural vision. In addition to its riverside parks, diverse cuisine, and vibrant traditions, the city will now showcase its respect for history and commitment to peace through this memorial.
