KUCHING – The Kuching Buddhist Lodge hosted a solemn and meaningful Vesak Day celebration this morning, drawing devotees and community members together to commemorate one of the most significant dates in the Buddhist calendar.
Vesak, observed on the full moon, honours the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha. This year’s theme, Promoting Harmony through Mutual Respect and Assistance, resonated strongly with attendees, serving as a reminder of the values of compassion and unity that extend beyond the Buddhist community into Sarawak’s diverse society.
The celebration included the annual Vegetarian Charity Bazaar, which was thoughtfully scheduled earlier this year.
Organisers explained that the adjustment allows devotees to dedicate more time on Vesak Day itself to spiritual practices such as bathing the Buddha statue and chanting scriptures.
The initiative was praised for balancing community engagement with religious devotion. Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Dato Wee Hong Seng, who attended the event, highlighted the importance of Vesak as a platform for fostering harmony.
He noted that the celebration reflects broader aspirations for Kuching’s future, where development in areas such as the green economy, smart city initiatives, modern public transport, aviation and tourism are progressing in tandem with values of compassion and balance.
The day’s programme also included preparations for a parade scheduled in the evening, inviting residents and visitors to participate. Such events not only strengthen cultural identity but also encourage inclusivity and civic pride.
In his remarks, Dato Wee expressed hope that the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha would guide the community forward.
He extended wishes for prosperity, peace, good health and happiness to all, emphasising that Vesak is a time for reflection and renewal.
The celebration at Kuching Buddhist Lodge demonstrated how religious observances can align with broader societal goals.
By promoting kindness and good deeds, the event reinforced the spirit of altruism that underpins both Buddhist teachings and Sarawak’s vision for sustainable development.
As devotees shared vegetarian meals and engaged in rituals, the atmosphere was marked by gratitude and fellowship.
The combination of spiritual practices and community activities ensured that Vesak Day was observed not only as a religious milestone but also as a collective affirmation of harmony and respect.
