KUCHING – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has rolled out two major enforcement operations to coincide with the upcoming festive season and school holidays.
Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha 2026 commenced nationwide on 24 May and will run until 31 May, followed immediately by Ops Gawai Dayak 2026, which continues across Sarawak until 6 June.
The special operations are designed to address the surge in traffic as thousands of people return to their hometowns or travel to holiday destinations.
JPJ Sarawak has pledged to intensify monitoring and enforcement along key routes and accident-prone areas throughout the state.
Officials explained that the focus will be on ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, drivers are prepared, and traffic laws are strictly observed.
The department stressed that safety remains the top priority, particularly during periods of heavy travel when risks of accidents are heightened.
JPJ has also issued a series of reminders to the public. Motorists are urged to check their vehicles before setting out, reduce speed in residential areas and at intersections, avoid using mobile phones while driving, and refrain from driving when fatigued.
The department emphasised that seat belts and helmets must be worn at all times, as these measures are proven to reduce injuries in emergencies.
Sarawak JPJ highlighted that enforcement will be uncompromising, with stern action taken against any non-compliance.
The department underscored that responsible driving is not only about following regulations but also about protecting lives and ensuring families can travel safely during the festive season.
Community leaders have welcomed the initiative, noting that such operations are vital in maintaining public confidence in road safety.
By combining enforcement with public awareness, JPJ aims to foster a culture of prudent driving that extends beyond the festive period.
The operations reflect JPJ’s broader mission to reduce road accidents and fatalities. As festive travel peaks, the department’s vigilance serves as a reminder that safety is a shared responsibility between authorities, drivers and passengers.
