SRI AMAN – A road accident on the Pan Borneo Highway near Melugu, Sri Aman-Serian route, claimed the life of a male driver on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred at a P-turn reinforcement section of the highway, where a Perodua Bezza with registration number SYQ3342 lost control and crashed into road barriers.
The accident was reported at 8.39 am, with the Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department (BBP Sri Aman) dispatched to the scene, approximately 10 kilometres away.
The operation was led by PBK I Noor Faqriakmal Bin Jamari, supported by a team equipped with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT Scania BME 7039) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS BMY 4446) unit.
Upon arrival, rescuers found that the female passenger had already been assisted out of the vehicle by members of the public.
The male driver, however, remained trapped inside. Firefighters carried out a rescue operation using full protective equipment, while the EMRS team provided preliminary treatment to the female victim before handing her over to Ministry of Health (KKM) personnel for further care.
Despite efforts, the male driver was confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers. His body was later handed over to the police for further action.
The rescue team proceeded to clear debris and cut damaged barriers to prevent hazards to other road users before concluding the operation.
The operation involved 15 officers and personnel, with additional support from four police officers and five KKM staff, including two ambulances.
Authorities noted that traffic congestion posed challenges during the rescue due to the distance of the P-turn section.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety along the Pan Borneo Highway, a major infrastructure project connecting Sarawak’s districts.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, particularly at high-risk sections such as P-turns and barrier reinforcements.
The Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department commended the swift cooperation between agencies and the public, stressing that community vigilance remains vital in reducing fatalities on the road.
