MIRI – The Mayor of Miri City Council (MBM), Adam Yii, has issued a firm directive to the contractor responsible for the renovation of the covered stage at Jalan Juba 5, Krokop, demanding that the project be completed by 12 August 2026.
During a site visit at 12.30 pm on 26 June, the Mayor met face-to-face with the contractor and stressed the need to accelerate progress.
He made clear that further delays would not be tolerated, noting that the community had already endured prolonged disruption due to construction setbacks.
The renovation is part of the Rural Transformation Plan, which aims to improve the environment surrounding the market, upgrade public facilities, and create a more conducive business setting for vendors and residents.
According to the mayor, earlier discrepancies between the design and the actual construction had caused parts of the project to be redone, slowing progress. These issues have now been resolved, leaving no justification for additional delays.
Mayor Yii instructed the contractor to deploy more manpower and resources to ensure the project advances swiftly.
He emphasised that while strict quality control is essential, indefinite postponements are unacceptable. “The people have waited a long time; we must provide them with an explanation,” he said.
The Miri City Council will continue to monitor the renovation closely, ensuring that the work meets both the deadline and the required standards.
The mayor highlighted that the council’s role is not only to enforce accountability but also to safeguard the interests of the public, who rely on these facilities for daily activities and livelihoods.
Local residents and market vendors have expressed frustration over the delays, as the construction has disrupted business operations and community events.
The mayor’s intervention is seen as a decisive step to restore confidence and ensure the project delivers tangible benefits.
The covered stage, once completed, is expected to serve as a central hub for community gatherings, cultural activities, and market-related events. Its renovation is part of a broader initiative to modernise infrastructure in Miri, aligning with Sarawak’s development goals under the Rural Transformation Plan.
By setting a clear deadline and demanding accountability, Mayor Yii has signalled his commitment to ensuring that public projects are completed efficiently and responsibly. The August deadline now stands as a crucial milestone for both the contractor and the community.
