KUCHING – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has intensified its enforcement against traffic violations through a targeted operation focusing on the misuse of HID and LED headlights.
The exercise, carried out on Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub on 26 June, was overseen by JPJ Sarawak Operations Section Head, Tuan Saifullah bin Hj Ali.
During the operation, officers inspected 844 vehicles of varying categories. The checks revealed a wide range of offences, including motorists driving without valid licences, expired licences, improper use of HID and LED lights, and registration plates that failed to meet regulatory standards. Several other technical breaches relating to vehicle compliance were also identified.
Four vehicles were seized as part of the enforcement. Among them were two cars and a motorcycle found to be operating with expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) and without valid insurance coverage.
Another motorcycle was confiscated after it was discovered being ridden by a foreign national who did not possess a valid driving licence.
JPJ Sarawak has emphasised that the use of non-compliant HID and LED lights poses a serious hazard to road safety.
Officials highlighted that such lights can impair the vision of other drivers, particularly at night, thereby increasing the likelihood of accidents.
The department reiterated its call for motorists to ensure their driving licences, vehicle licences, and insurance documents are kept valid at all times.
The enforcement drive reflects JPJ Sarawak’s commitment to maintaining road safety standards. Authorities have pledged to continue strengthening monitoring efforts, stressing that violations will be dealt with firmly and without compromise.
The department underscored that all actions taken during the operation were consistent with current legal provisions.
Traffic safety experts have long warned about the dangers of unauthorised vehicle modifications, particularly lighting systems that exceed approved specifications.
Studies have shown that glare from improperly fitted headlights can reduce reaction times and heighten accident risks.
JPJ’s latest operation aligns with broader national efforts to curb unsafe driving practices and improve public safety on Malaysian roads.
The department has also reminded road users that enforcement activities will remain ongoing, with similar operations expected to be conducted across Sarawak.
JPJ’s stance is clear: compliance with road regulations is essential to safeguard the wellbeing of all motorists and pedestrians.
