KUCHING – The Sarawak government is considering introducing special discounts for senior citizens during the 30th edition of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in 2027, as part of efforts to make the event more inclusive and to honour long-time supporters.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, revealed that the proposal is among several initiatives being studied in conjunction with the festival’s milestone anniversary.
He explained that the discounts would serve as a gesture of appreciation to older attendees who have consistently supported RWMF over the years.
“Next year is the 30th anniversary of the RWMF and we are considering several reforms, including a proposal to offer special discounts to senior citizens as a token of appreciation to those who have continued to support the festival for so long,” he said during a press conference at the Sarawak Cultural Village on Friday.
The Minister added that the initiative aims to broaden participation by ensuring that more sections of the community, particularly the elderly, can enjoy the international music festival. He stressed that inclusivity is a key priority as the festival continues to evolve.
Beyond the discount proposal, the state government is also exploring other reforms to maintain RWMF’s relevance and competitiveness.
The festival has grown significantly since its inception three decades ago, transforming into one of Sarawak’s most prominent cultural tourism icons and attracting visitors from across the globe.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim expressed confidence that the 30th anniversary will mark another important milestone in the festival’s history, further strengthening Sarawak’s position as a major cultural tourism destination in the region.
He noted that RWMF has consistently showcased the state’s rich cultural heritage, diverse ethnic traditions, and natural beauty, while also contributing to the local economy.
The Rainforest World Music Festival has become a platform not only for music but also for promoting art, culture, and sustainability.
Its international recognition has helped boost Sarawak’s tourism industry, which continues to generate significant revenue and create opportunities for local communities.
With the 30th edition approaching, the proposed reforms are expected to enhance the festival’s appeal and ensure that it remains a highlight of Sarawak’s cultural calendar.
The inclusion of senior citizen discounts would reflect the festival’s commitment to accessibility and appreciation for loyal supporters.
