The 2026 Class B2 Driving Licence Assistance Programme was formally handed over during a ceremony at SMK Sacred Heart Hall, Sibu, on 27 June.

The event was officiated by the Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and Lanang Member of Parliament, YB Puan Alice Lau Kiong Yieng.

A total of 712 candidates from the constituency were confirmed to have passed both theoretical and practical tests set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Their success highlights the effectiveness of the initiative in supporting residents to secure valid licences and comply with national road regulations.

JPJ Sarawak Director, YBrs Tuan Norizan bin Jili, also attended the ceremony, underscoring the department’s commitment to ensuring the smooth implementation of the programme.

His presence reflected JPJ’s role in guiding the process and reinforcing its objectives for community benefit.

The programme is designed to ease the financial burden of residents while encouraging lawful road use. By assisting candidates in obtaining licences, the initiative aims to reduce the number of unlicensed riders and improve overall road safety standards.

Officials noted that the effort also contributes to cultivating responsible driving behaviour among younger riders.

In her remarks, YB Alice Lau emphasised the importance of such programmes in empowering local communities.

She said the initiative demonstrates the collective commitment of government agencies and stakeholders to help residents meet legal requirements and enhance safety on the roads.

JPJ Sarawak expressed appreciation to all parties involved in the success of the programme, including local organisations and community leaders.

The department hopes that the cooperation established will continue to grow, producing more competent and cautious drivers across Sarawak.

Road safety remains a pressing issue in Malaysia, with motorcycles accounting for a significant proportion of traffic accidents nationwide.

Programmes like the one in Lanang are seen as crucial steps in reducing risks and promoting compliance with traffic laws.

By equipping residents with proper licences, authorities aim to instil a culture of responsibility and vigilance among road users.

The Lanang initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar efforts in other constituencies, reinforcing the government’s broader agenda of improving road safety and ensuring that all drivers and riders are adequately trained and licensed.
