KUCHING – Sabah and Sarawak have agreed to formalise cross-regional economic cooperation in the Borneo territory, a move aimed at strengthening trade, investment and regional development.
The agreement was reached following a courtesy call by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II and Minister for Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, Datuk Ewon Benedick, on Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Both leaders emphasised that the cooperation will be strategically coordinated through Sabah’s ministry alongside Sarawak’s Ministry for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED).
Datuk Ewon highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating, “Sabah needs Sarawak, and Sarawak needs Sabah to ensure this Borneo territory develops more dynamically.”
He made the remarks during the official opening of the 17th Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Gawai-Kaamatan Exhibition and Business Event in Kuching.
The joint organisation of the exhibition by DCCI and KCCI was cited as evidence of the strong ties and unity between the two states.
Leaders noted that the Gawai Dayak and Pesta Kaamatan celebrations have evolved beyond harvest festivals, becoming platforms that connect economic, social and cultural aspects of the Borneo community.
The two-day exhibition featured more than 50 exhibitors from Sabah and Sarawak, showcasing handicrafts, agro-based products, food items and creative industry outputs.
Organisers stressed that this diversity reflects the rich cultural heritage of Borneo and serves as a driver for the development of a unique, high-value creative economy.
Datuk Ewon urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in both states to seize opportunities presented by cross-regional cooperation.
He encouraged businesses to explore new markets, adopt digital technology and build strategic networks through business matching sessions.
The formalisation of cooperation between Sabah and Sarawak is expected to pave the way for stronger regional integration, boosting economic resilience and competitiveness.
Leaders believe that by working together, both states can leverage their strengths to attract investment, expand trade and create sustainable growth across the Borneo territory.
