Miri Council’s Waste to Wealth Programme Records Strong Growth

MIRI – Miri City Council (MBM) has reported significant progress in its ongoing “Waste to Wealth” recycled goods buy-back programme, which continues to encourage residents to adopt recycling practices as part of sustainable waste management.

UDC Event 2026

The initiative, introduced in 2024, has steadily grown in scope and impact. By 27 June 2026, seven editions of the programme had been successfully organised, resulting in the collection of 16,782.40 kilogrammes of recyclable materials.

This figure already surpasses the total collection achieved in 2025, despite several more sessions scheduled before the end of the year.

The most recent edition, held at the Miri Community Green Hub in Taman Yakin, recorded 2,246.10 kilogrammes of materials.

This included 1,716.90 kilogrammes of general recyclables, 230.50 kilogrammes of used cooking oil, and 298.70 kilogrammes of electronic waste.

The Council highlighted that the inclusion of e-waste and cooking oil demonstrates the programme’s broadening scope, addressing different categories of waste that pose environmental challenges if not properly managed.

Officials noted that the programme’s consistent upward trend since its inception reflects both the effectiveness of strategic partnerships and the growing commitment of the local community.

By offering buy-back incentives, the council has been able to strengthen public participation in recycling while also supporting wider circular economy practices.

The Council emphasised that the initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 11 on sustainable cities, SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production, SDG 13 on climate action, and SDG 17 on partnerships for the goals.

These connections underline the broader significance of the programme beyond local waste management, linking it to global sustainability efforts.

Miri City Council expressed appreciation to its strategic partners and residents for their continued support, noting that collective action is essential to maintaining momentum.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the programme and ensuring that recycling becomes a regular practice among households and businesses.

Community members are encouraged to continue participating in upcoming editions of the programme, which not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also provide tangible benefits through the buy-back system.

The Council believes that with sustained cooperation, Miri can strengthen its reputation as a city committed to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
