KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has announced funding of RM1.76 million for the construction of a new building to house the Sri Satok Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE).
The allocation was formally presented by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg to the Petra Jaya Welfare Association (PKPJ) during a ceremony held at the Datuk Amar Hajah Juma’ani Welfare Centre on Jalan Kulas.
The cheque was received by PKPJ Deputy Chairman Datuk Dr Hajjah Munirah Hassan, marking a significant step towards enhancing facilities for the elderly community in Satok and surrounding areas.
The new centre will be constructed adjacent to the PKPJ headquarters, ensuring close collaboration between welfare organisations and the senior citizens they serve.
Officials explained that the project is intended to provide modern, safe and accessible facilities for older residents.
The centre will act as a hub for social interaction, recreational activities and community support, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Sarawak’s ageing population.
With the number of senior citizens steadily rising in Kuching and nearby districts, the initiative is seen as timely and necessary.
The PAWE programme, established under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, has been rolled out across Malaysia to encourage active ageing and community participation among senior citizens.
The new Sri Satok facility is expected to complement existing centres by offering more spacious and conducive surroundings, tailored to the needs of older residents.
Speaking at the event, the premier emphasised the importance of creating inclusive spaces that promote dignity and well-being.
He noted that the centre would not only provide a venue for activities but also serve as a symbol of the state’s respect and care for its elderly population.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) and Satok Assemblyman YB Datuk Haji Ibrahim Baki; Mayor of Kuching North City Hall YBhg. Dato Haji Hilmy Othman; and Deputy Secretary to the Sarawak Government (Economy and Development) YBhg. Dato Sri Dr Haji Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
Their presence underscored the collaborative effort between government agencies and local authorities in supporting welfare initiatives.
Community leaders have welcomed the announcement, highlighting that the centre will provide a safe environment for seniors to engage in social, cultural and educational programmes.
The facility is expected to strengthen community bonds and encourage active participation among older residents, aligning with broader goals of social inclusion and public health.
Construction is scheduled to begin soon, with the centre anticipated to become a focal point for senior citizens in Satok.
Once completed, it will stand as a testament to Sarawak’s ongoing investment in community development and welfare infrastructure.
