KUCHING – Sarawak marked a new milestone in its technological journey with the official launch of WD Sarawak Plant 2 on 2 July, underscoring the state’s transformation into a hub for global artificial intelligence (AI) innovation.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, officiated the ceremony titled “WD Sarawak – New Horizons for WD Sarawak: Advancing AI Innovations & Powering Growth”. He reflected on the state’s industrial progress since the opening of WD’s first facility at the same site in 1995.
“Thirty years ago, Sarawak was focused on industrialising our economy, attracting investments and creating employment opportunities. Today, this same site supports some of the world’s most advanced technologies and serves global markets,” he said.
The Premier highlighted that WD’s continued investment demonstrates international confidence in Sarawak’s economic policies, skilled workforce and investment ecosystem.
He noted that generations of Sarawakians have built careers with WD, contributing as engineers, technicians, managers and leaders, while supporting thousands of families across the state.
The launch of Plant 2 represents Sarawak’s transition into a new economic era where AI, digital transformation and advanced technologies drive productivity, competitiveness and growth.
Abang Johari stressed that innovation must translate into meaningful opportunities for Sarawakians, through quality employment, workforce development and industry participation.
“Our objective is to ensure Sarawakians are not merely consumers of technology, but active contributors to the future economy,” he said, adding that the state aims to be recognised globally for its talent, innovation and technological capabilities, alongside its natural resources.
The ceremony also witnessed WD Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability. The company secured 100 per cent renewable energy for its Sarawak operations through a Renewable Energy Certificate agreement with Sarawak Energy Berhad.
The agreement, signed by WD Senior Vice President of Global Operations Dr Chandra Anamirtham and Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili, supports WD’s global target of achieving carbon-free energy by 2030.
The Premier expressed confidence that the partnership between WD and Sarawak will continue to strengthen the state’s innovation ecosystem, creating greater opportunities for future generations.
Plant 2 is expected to play a pivotal role in positioning Sarawak as a centre for advanced technology and sustainable industrial growth.
