The meeting marked General Azhan’s first official engagement with the Governor since assuming his role as Commander of the Malaysian Army on 1 January 2026.

He was accompanied by the Eastern Field Commander, Lieutenant General Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi, and his wife, Datin Emi Irawati Rosli.

During the session, General Azhan provided an overview of the current state of the Malaysian Army. His briefing covered national defence priorities, including the security environment, operational challenges, and the ongoing modernisation of military assets.

He highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening readiness and implementing transformation programmes to ensure the army remains capable of safeguarding Malaysia’s sovereignty.

Tun Wan Junaidi, who has long-standing experience in matters of national security, reflected on his involvement in the Rajang Area Security Command (RASCOM).

He recalled strategies used to counter threats in Sarawak during that period, stressing that effective leadership, constant preparedness, and close collaboration between the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and government institutions are vital for maintaining peace and stability.

The Governor expressed confidence in the army’s ability to adapt to evolving challenges. He noted that investment in modern defence systems and the development of human capital would be crucial in ensuring Malaysia’s continued stability.

He emphasised that the nation’s security depends not only on equipment but also on the professionalism and resilience of its personnel.

General Azhan’s visit also underscored the importance of strengthening ties between the Malaysian Army and the Sarawak Government.

Both parties acknowledged the need for sustained cooperation in addressing regional and national security concerns.

The Governor conveyed his appreciation for the visit and expressed hope that such engagements would reinforce mutual understanding and strategic collaboration.

The courtesy call comes at a time when Malaysia is facing increasingly complex defence demands, including maritime security, technological advancements in warfare, and regional geopolitical shifts.

Analysts have noted that the Malaysian Army has been actively pursuing modernisation programmes, such as upgrading armoured vehicles, enhancing surveillance systems, and expanding training initiatives to prepare for multidimensional threats.

Sarawak, with its strategic location and diverse communities, has historically played a significant role in national defence. The Governor’s remarks highlighted the state’s contribution to maintaining national unity and security.

His reflections on past operations served as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation in safeguarding the country’s interests.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of shared commitment to defending Malaysia’s sovereignty and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

Both the Governor and the Army Chief expressed optimism that continued collaboration would strengthen national resilience and foster peace across the nation.
