KUCHING – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) paid a courtesy visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching on Monday, 13 July 2026, underscoring efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in land transport and governance.
The delegation, led by JPJ Sarawak Director Norizan Jili, was warmly received by Consul General Dr Abdullah Zulkifli and senior officers of the Indonesian Consulate. The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both sides to strengthen diplomatic relations and expand strategic collaboration, particularly in areas of cross-border transport on the island of Borneo.
Discussions during the visit centred on improving the efficiency of land transport systems, ensuring compliance with legal frameworks, and reinforcing cooperation networks between Malaysia and Indonesia. Both parties acknowledged that closer collaboration would benefit communities on both sides of the border, especially in facilitating smoother movement of people and goods.
The JPJ delegation also toured the Consulate General’s facilities, gaining insight into the services provided to Indonesians residing in Sarawak. This included an overview of administrative functions and support systems available to the Indonesian community, reflecting the Consulate’s role in fostering strong ties between the two nations.
Accompanying the Director were Deputy Director Mohd Faizal David Jemat and Head of Vehicle Licensing Division, Maya Morshidi. Their presence reinforced JPJ Sarawak’s commitment to building institutional partnerships and ensuring that transport governance remains efficient, safe, and sustainable.
JPJ Sarawak has consistently emphasised its role in expanding strategic cooperation with both domestic and international agencies. The department views such engagements as vital in advancing Malaysia’s aspirations for high-quality public service delivery. By strengthening transport governance, JPJ aims to ensure that systems remain responsive to the needs of the public while supporting broader national development goals.
The visit also highlighted the importance of Sarawak’s unique position in Malaysia’s transport landscape. With its geographical proximity to Indonesia, Sarawak plays a pivotal role in cross-border connectivity. Enhanced cooperation between JPJ and the Indonesian Consulate is expected to contribute to smoother coordination in areas such as vehicle licensing, road safety, and enforcement.
Observers note that cross-border transport issues have become increasingly significant as economic activity and population mobility grow across Borneo. Effective collaboration between agencies is seen as essential in addressing challenges such as traffic management, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure development.
The courtesy call concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation. JPJ Sarawak expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to evolve, ensuring that land transport governance remains aligned with the aspirations of both Malaysia and Indonesia.
