TAIPING, PERAK — The Festival Peranakan Malaysia 2026 has successfully concluded in Taiping, celebrating the colourful traditions, heritage and cultural identity of the Baba Nyonya community.
Held from 3 to 5 July 2026, the three-day festival attracted culture enthusiasts, heritage lovers and members of the local community who came together to experience the unique charm of Peranakan traditions.
The event featured a wide range of cultural activities, including traditional performances, heritage exhibitions, food showcases, handicraft displays and community programmes aimed at promoting greater appreciation of Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage.
Visitors had the opportunity to explore the beauty of Baba Nyonya culture through traditional Nyonya costumes, especially the elegant kebaya, as well as enjoy authentic Peranakan cuisine that reflects a blend of Chinese influences and local Southeast Asian flavours.
Traditional arts and performances also became a major highlight of the festival, with Dondang Sayang among the cultural presentations that showcased the creativity, storytelling and musical heritage of the Peranakan community.
The festival served as an important platform to introduce younger generations to the traditions and values passed down by the Baba Nyonya community over many years. Through cultural displays and interactive activities, visitors gained a deeper understanding of the customs, lifestyle and history that form an important part of Malaysia’s multicultural identity.
The Baba Nyonya community, also known as the Peranakan Chinese community, has a long history in the Straits region, particularly in places such as Melaka, Penang and other historic towns across Malaysia. Their unique cultural identity combines Chinese heritage with local traditions, creating a distinctive way of life reflected in their language, clothing, food and celebrations.
The successful organisation of Festival Peranakan Malaysia 2026 has further strengthened Taiping’s reputation as a heritage destination in Perak.
