PADAWAN – Enforcement officers from the Padawan branch of the Sarawak Road Transport Department (BSPT) have taken action against a driver who was caught running a red traffic light, following the circulation of a video on social media.
The incident, which quickly gained public attention online, prompted an investigation by BSPT. The driver was subsequently issued a summons under Rule 17 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 [L.N. 167/59], enforced under the Road Transport Act 1987.
Authorities stressed that compliance with traffic signals is not merely a matter of avoiding penalties but a fundamental responsibility to ensure the safety of all road users. Running a red light is considered a serious offence, as it endangers both the driver and others on the road.
JSPT Sarawak reiterated its firm stance that there will be no compromise when it comes to road safety violations. The department emphasised that traffic laws exist to protect lives, and adherence to them is essential for maintaining order and reducing accidents.
The case highlights the growing role of social media in road safety enforcement. Viral videos often bring attention to reckless behaviour, enabling authorities to act swiftly. Officials noted that public vigilance and reporting play an important role in supporting enforcement efforts.
Traffic light offences remain one of the most common violations detected during road operations in Sarawak. Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise patience and discipline at intersections, reminding them that a few seconds of waiting can prevent accidents and save lives.
The Padawan case serves as a reminder that enforcement agencies are closely monitoring compliance and will act decisively against offenders. With increasing collaboration between the public and enforcement bodies, road safety campaigns aim to instil greater awareness and responsibility among motorists.
