BAU – Police in Bau carried out an integrated crime prevention operation on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, which led to the arrest of eight men suspected of drug abuse.
The operation, conducted between 10.30am and 1.00pm, covered several villages including Kampung Skiat Lama, Kampung Merembeh, Kampung Pangkalan Tebang, and Kampung Tringgus. Officers from the Bau District Police Headquarters, supported by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, coordinated the effort as part of ongoing measures to curb drug-related activities in the district.
According to Bau District Police Chief, PISUPT Mohd Haide bin A. Rahman, the suspects, aged between 23 and 31, were detained during the operation. Four of them were found in possession of transparent plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu. These individuals were held under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Initial screening tests carried out on all eight suspects returned positive results for drug use. As a result, they were detained under relevant provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and further action will be taken in accordance with the law.
The Bau District Police emphasised that the operation reflects their commitment to tackling drug abuse and ensuring community safety. Authorities have urged the public to play a role in supporting crime prevention efforts by reporting suspicious activities.
Residents can provide information directly to the Bukit Aman Narcotics hotline at 012-2087222 or the Sarawak IPK Narcotics hotline at 017-5929211. Police assured that all information provided will be treated confidentially and used to strengthen enforcement against drug-related offences.
Drug abuse remains a pressing concern across Sarawak, with authorities intensifying operations in both urban and rural areas. The Bau operation is part of a wider strategy to disrupt supply chains, apprehend offenders, and reduce the impact of narcotics on local communities.
Community cooperation is seen as vital in sustaining these efforts. Police have consistently highlighted the importance of vigilance, encouraging residents to report any signs of drug activity. By working together, law enforcement and the public can help reduce the prevalence of drug abuse and its associated social harms.
The arrests in Bau underline the seriousness with which authorities are addressing the issue. While the suspects will face due legal process, the operation serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by narcotics and the need for continued enforcement.
As Sarawak continues to strengthen its crime prevention strategies, operations such as this demonstrate the proactive stance taken by police in safeguarding communities. The Bau District Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
