KUCHING – The historic waterfront area of Minda Hua has received a significant cultural boost with the restoration and unveiling of a traditional “Kotak” fishing boat.
The project, spearheaded by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), aims to preserve the maritime heritage of the locality while serving as a tangible symbol of the hard work and resilience of past generations of fishing communities.
The launch event took place recently, drawing attention to the deep historical roots of the area. For decades, Minda Hua relied heavily on the river for its economic sustenance.
The “Kotak” boat, now permanently displayed as a landmark, represents the livelihoods of countless families who depended on fishing to survive.
It stands not merely as an object of nostalgia but as an educational tool for the younger generation, reminding them that the progress enjoyed today is built upon the sweat and struggles of their ancestors.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who oversaw the beautification initiative, emphasised the importance of remembering local history to foster community pride. He noted that a city which acknowledges its past possesses a unique warmth and identity.
By restoring the vessel, the council hopes to instil a sense of belonging and continuity among residents, ensuring that the stories of Minda Hua are not lost to time.
However, the mayor also used the occasion to address broader issues regarding local development and political discourse.
He expressed frustration with the pace of progress in previous years, describing a period of prolonged waiting for tangible improvements.
In his remarks, he criticised what he perceived as empty rhetoric from certain quarters, particularly during election cycles.
He pointed out that while some individuals were quick to criticise the government and local leadership on social media, they had failed to produce concrete results or contribute meaningfully to the area’s development over the decades.
Dato Wee highlighted the disconnect between online commentary and practical reality. He addressed recent suggestions that state leadership should exclusively use the newly launched AirBorneo airline for travel, noting the logistical impracticality given that the carrier currently operates only two aircraft.
Similarly, he dismissed criticisms regarding local transport initiatives, such as the pink bus service, arguing that such comments often lacked substance and failed to recognise the efforts being made to improve public infrastructure.
“The citizens see it all,” the mayor stated, reflecting a sentiment that residents prefer tangible, down-to-earth achievements over pretty words or political posturing.
He asserted that the people of Kuching desire visible changes and consistent development rather than hollow promises.
Looking ahead, Dato Wee expressed confidence in the future of Minda Hua. He called for a collaborative approach between the community, the state government, and the municipal council to bring in further resources.
The goal is to ensure that Minda Hua not only preserves its rich history but also evolves into a modern, vibrant precinct.
He invited the public to view the restored boat as a starting point for a broader transformation, promising that the area would continue to progress and shine.
The Mayor extended his gratitude to the various organisations, individuals, and sponsors who supported the beautification project.
Their contributions were instrumental in bringing the vision to life. He encouraged residents and visitors to visit the site, take photographs, and enjoy the revitalised space.
Furthermore, he appealed to the public to cherish these public facilities, urging everyone to play a part in keeping the area clean and beautiful for future generations.
As Minda Hua enters this new chapter, the restored “Kotak” boat serves as a poignant reminder of where the community has come from and a beacon of hope for where it is going.
With renewed focus on heritage preservation and practical development, the area is poised to become a model of how history and modernity can coexist harmoniously.
The Mayor’s message was clear: through unity, cooperation, and a focus on real results, Minda Hua will continue to grow in prosperity and beauty.
