KUCHING – The annual observance of Sarawak Day serves as a vital mechanism for reinforcing social cohesion and promoting public health, according to the state’s Deputy Premier.
Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised that the occasion should be viewed not merely as a statutory holiday but as a foundational element for sustainable development through unity and wellness.
Speaking at the Walk for Sarawak programme on Wednesday, which formed part of the broader Sarawak Day 2026 celebrations, Dr Sim highlighted the dual purpose of the festivities.
He argued that bringing people together for physical activity helps instil healthy lifestyle habits while simultaneously strengthening bonds across racial and cultural lines. This approach, he noted, is essential for the long-term progress of the state.
The significance of July 22 dates back to 2016, when the former Chief Minister, the late Tun Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, gazetted it as a public holiday.
Dr Sim recalled that Tun Adenan’s vision was for every citizen to embrace the day as a celebration of their unique identity and shared love for Sarawak. It was intended to be a moment of pride, regardless of one’s background or location.
“The spirit of Sarawak Day is for all Sarawakians. No matter where you are, celebrate Sarawak Day in your own way,” Dr Sim stated.
He elaborated on the inclusive nature of the event, pointing out that the act of walking together transcends ethnic divisions.
Whether participants identified as Iban, Malay, Chinese, Indian, or from other communities, the shared experience fostered a sense of belonging.
This collective participation, he argued, is crucial for nurturing the spirit of togetherness that defines the state’s social fabric.
Beyond social harmony, Dr Sim drew attention to the practical benefits of a healthy populace. He explained that Sarawak is increasingly gaining recognition as a model for development, placing greater responsibility on its citizens to maintain their well-being.
A healthy population is better equipped to contribute to economic and social advancement, whereas poor public health imposes burdens on the state.
“When the people are healthy, Sarawak will also be healthier. Conversely, if the people are not healthy, the state also bears the consequences.”
Consequently, he urged residents to adopt sustainable health practices. By prioritising personal wellness, individuals ensure they can continue to play an active role in the state’s growth.
This message was reinforced by the presence of thousands of walkers who participated in the morning event, demonstrating a community-wide commitment to fitness.
Dr Sim also touched upon the enduring nature of Sarawakian identity. He reminded attendees that birthplace creates an unbreakable link, meaning that even those who migrate overseas or acquire citizenship elsewhere remain Sarawakians at heart.
In this context, he encouraged the public to uphold the Sarawak flag as a potent symbol of unity and pride, wherever they may reside globally.
Acknowledgement was given to the local authorities for their instrumental role in organising the celebrations.
Dr Sim expressed gratitude to the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
Their collaborative efforts ensured a vibrant array of activities that enlivened the festivities across the region.
The event was attended by several key local leaders, including Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Batu Kitang State Assemblyman Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang.
Representing the Kuching North Mayor was DBKU Director Ramzi Abdillah, while Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin was also in attendance.
Municipal chairmen from Padawan and Kota Samarahan, Tan Kai and Abang Ismawi Abang Ali respectively, joined the gathering, alongside Kuching South Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and Acting Secretary Wong Ming Kong.
Their presence underscored the multi-tiered support for the Sarawak Day agenda. From municipal councils to the state executive, there is a coordinated effort to use this annual milestone to build national identity and self-esteem among citizens.
As Sarawak continues to evolve, such initiatives remain pivotal in aligning public sentiment with the broader nation-building goals of the government.
