BINTULU – Members of the Bintulu Speakers Club (BSC) marked Sarawak Day with a distinctive outdoor gathering that blended physical activity, environmental stewardship, and communication skills development.
Held on the morning of 22 July 2026 at Tumbina Hill, the event offered a refreshing alternative to traditional indoor meetings, emphasising the club’s commitment to holistic personal growth and community service.
The programme commenced at Gate A, near the Boulevard, where participants gathered for networking and warm-up exercises before embarking on their trail. A total of seven individuals, comprising both Toastmasters members and guests, joined the initiative.
The early start allowed the group to enjoy the cool morning air while engaging in a guided jungle trek through the scenic hills of Bintulu.
A key component of the hike was “plogging,” a portmanteau of jogging and picking up litter. As the group traversed the paths, they actively collected trash, contributing to the preservation of the natural environment.
This act of service underscored the importance of protecting Sarawak’s lush landscapes, turning a recreational activity into a meaningful contribution to local conservation efforts.
Interspersed with the physical activity were educational and interactive segments designed to test knowledge and sharpen speaking abilities.
Participants engaged in a Sarawak Day quiz, answering questions related to the state’s rich history, cultural diversity, landmarks, and heritage.
This element added an intellectual layer to the event, fostering a deeper appreciation for the occasion being celebrated.
Additionally, the group participated in impromptu table topics sessions amidst the natural surroundings. This classic Toastmasters exercise challenged attendees to speak spontaneously on themes related to Sarawak, nature, and community values.
The unique setting provided a relaxed yet stimulating atmosphere for members to practise articulation and quick thinking, demonstrating that leadership and communication skills can be honed outside the confines of a meeting room.
TM Hiew, the Vice President of Membership for the Bintulu Speakers Club, highlighted the dual purpose of the event.
He noted that the programme was designed to strengthen bonds among members while promoting environmental responsibility.
“Toastmasters is not only about giving speeches in a meeting room. We believe communication, leadership, and fellowship can also be developed through meaningful outdoor activities like this. Celebrating Sarawak Day by giving back to nature makes the occasion even more meaningful,” he stated.
The morning concluded with a cooling-down session, followed by group photographs and refreshments. In a festive touch, complimentary ice cream was served to all participants, adding a sweet end to an active and engaging morning.
