LAWAS – The annual commemoration of Sarawak Day serves as a crucial platform for reinforcing social cohesion and fostering a deep appreciation for the state’s historical journey, according to the Member of Parliament for Lawas. Dato Henry Sum Agong emphasised that these celebrations are essential for nurturing patriotism and ensuring that the spirit of unity remains intact across generations.
Speaking at the Lawas Waterfront on Wednesday, the parliamentarian highlighted the importance of instilling a sense of historical awareness in the younger demographic. He argued that understanding the significance of 22 July is vital for cultivating a sense of responsibility towards the state’s future development. By recognising the struggles and milestones of the past, citizens can better appreciate the progress achieved today.
“Sarawak Day should always be celebrated just like Malaysia Day because this celebration reminds us of the history and development journey of the state which has brought many changes and progress to the people,” he said. He drew a parallel between the two significant dates, suggesting that both hold equal weight in shaping the national and state identity.
Dato Henry further stressed that the continuity of Sarawak’s prosperity relies heavily on the engagement of its youth. He described the younger generation as the custodians of the state’s future, tasked with maintaining the harmony and driving the economic agenda forward. Their active participation in such commemorations helps bridge the gap between historical legacy and modern aspirations.
Beyond the cultural and historical aspects, the event also provided an opportunity to discuss tangible infrastructure developments in the district. The Lawas constituency is currently undergoing a transformation driven by several strategic projects. These include the construction of a new airport, the development of the Pulau Sari Deep Sea Port, and extensive improvements to the road network and bridge infrastructure.
These initiatives are expected to significantly boost local economic growth by enhancing connectivity and facilitating trade. The celebration was organised by the Sarawak Women’s Development Association (PPWS) Lawas Branch, which aimed to make the event both educational and engaging. Suriah Jinin, the branch chairman, explained that the programme was designed not only to commemorate the historic date but also to ensure that the state’s heritage is passed down to future generations.
To achieve this, the event featured a variety of community-centric activities. Participants engaged in aerobics sessions, while others showcased their skills in traditional ketupat weaving and flower arrangement competitions. A unique fashion competition using recycled newspapers added a creative and environmentally conscious element to the festivities.
Additionally, the gathering served a charitable purpose. Funds were collected to support the welfare of PPWS members who had been affected by recent disasters. This aspect of the celebration highlighted the strong sense of mutual aid and solidarity within the community, reinforcing the theme of unity that underpins Sarawak Day.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including the Lawas District Officer, Ladin Atok, and Councillor Haris Majid. Auji Najian Garip, the Head of the PBB Bukit Sari Women’s Movement, was also present, demonstrating broad support from various community and political sectors.
As Lawas continues to evolve, the balance between preserving cultural heritage and embracing modern development remains a key focus. Events like the Sarawak Day celebration provide a space for reflection and community bonding, ensuring that progress does not come at the expense of identity.
