SERIAN – A major collaborative effort to elevate academic standards in the district was launched on 29 July 2026 with the Tagap Mancang Lonjakan SPM 2026 Programme.
Held at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Serian Community Centre, the event brought together key stakeholders from the education sector, local government, and community leadership to strategise for the upcoming national examinations.
The initiative underscores a unified commitment to the Menjulan Pendidikan Sarawak agenda, aiming to create a supportive ecosystem for students.
By fostering closer ties between schools and the wider community, organisers hope to address challenges holistically and ensure that learners receive consistent encouragement both inside and outside the classroom.
The gathering saw the participation of 108 school principals and head teachers, alongside an equal number of Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) presidents from across the Serian district.
This significant turnout highlights the widespread recognition among educational leaders and parents that student success is a collective responsibility rather than solely the domain of schools.
Several prominent figures attended to show their support for the cause. Yang Berhormat Dr. Simon Sinang anak Bada, the State Assemblyman for N.21 Tebedu, joined Dr. Les anak Met, Deputy Director of the School Management Sector at the Sarawak State Education Department (JPN).
Also present were Dr. Chali anak Unggang, Chairman of the DBNA Serian Branch, Temenggong Henry Bujang Sendan, the Temenggong Bidayuh of Serian Division, and Encik Mohamad Rashdan bin Haji Hazemi, representing the Serian Division Resident.
Encik Bunsie anak Tunton, the Serian District Education Officer, opened the proceedings by highlighting the necessity of multi-party cooperation.
He noted that while schools provide formal instruction, the broader environment created by parents, community leaders, and local agencies plays a crucial role in sustaining student motivation and creating conducive learning conditions.
During his presentation, Dr Les anak Met introduced a strategic approach focused on early intervention. He advocated for the principle that “Mitigation is Better Than Intervention,” urging educators and parents to identify learning difficulties at the primary school level before they escalate into significant barriers in secondary education. This proactive stance aims to build a stronger academic foundation for all students.
Dr Les also highlighted the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) as a powerful motivator. He explained that awareness of this opportunity could inspire secondary students to strive for excellence in their SPM results, knowing that higher education is financially accessible to them.
This link between current performance and future prospects was presented as a key driver for academic ambition.
Community involvement was further emphasised by Dr Chali anak Unggang, who called on residents to take an active role in guiding the younger generation.
He stressed that protecting students from social ills and providing moral support are vital components of community empowerment. According to him, the entire society shares the duty of nurturing virtuous and capable citizens.
Yang Berhormat Dr Simon Sinang anak Bada reinforced the transformative power of education. He described it as the primary vehicle for improving family livelihoods and building a progressive, competitive society.
He pledged continued support for initiatives that enhance student achievement in the Serian District, aligning political will with educational goals.
The programme included an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing parents and community members to raise concerns about educational facilities and offer suggestions for improvement.
This dialogue provided valuable insights into the specific needs of schools in the district and facilitated direct communication between the public and education officials.
Overall, the Tagap Mancang Lonjakan SPM 2026 Programme served as a strategic platform for strengthening networks among schools, families, and local leaders.
By aligning their efforts, these groups aim to boost SPM 2026 performance and contribute to the development of an excellent, knowledgeable, and morally grounded generation in Sarawak.
