KUCHING – The landscape of urban mobility in Sarawak is set for a significant transformation with the ongoing implementation of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS).

The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, emphasised that the initiative extends far beyond the mere provision of transit vehicles. He described the project as a strategic driver for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD).
This planning concept focuses on creating high-density, mixed-use communities centred around public transport hubs.
The goal is to seamlessly integrate residential housing, commercial enterprises, and public amenities in close proximity to transit stations, thereby reducing the reliance on private vehicles.
During the Naming Rights Agreement Exchange Ceremony for Station SM07, held between Sarawak Metro Sdn. Bhd. and Ibraco Berhad, the Premier highlighted the broader implications of this collaboration.
He noted that such partnerships demonstrate a shared commitment to strengthening the state’s public transport framework.
The event underscored the importance of public-private cooperation in delivering world-class infrastructure that meets international standards.
Abang Jo stated that Sarawak is dedicated to evolving into a modern metropolis equipped with superior transport solutions.
The ultimate objective is to enhance the mobility of the population and elevate their overall quality of life. He remarked on the systemic impact of the project, noting its role in future urban planning.
“KUTS will be the backbone of future urban development and support economic growth and the well-being of the people,” he said.
Beyond immediate transportation benefits, the development of a clean and efficient transit system is viewed as a key factor in boosting Sarawak’s appeal to both tourists and investors.
The state government has expressed a strong desire to position Sarawak as one of the cleanest regions globally. This ambition includes maintaining high standards of air quality and promoting environmentally friendly practices.
A reliable public transport network is considered essential to achieving these environmental goals, as it helps reduce carbon emissions associated with private car usage.
In a move to further stimulate the tourism sector, the Premier announced a new travel initiative involving AirBorneo.
The national carrier plans to introduce a comprehensive travel package priced at RM375. This offer is designed to simplify the visitor experience by bundling airfare with access to the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) service.
Additionally, the package includes transport from the ART station directly to the traveller’s hotel, ensuring a seamless journey from arrival to accommodation.
This initiative aims to add significant value to the tourist experience, making Sarawak a more attractive destination for international and domestic visitors.
By facilitating easier movement within the city, the government expects to see an increase in tourist arrivals, which in turn will support the growth of the local hospitality industry and contribute to the state’s economic resilience.
The KUTS project represents a historic milestone as the first urban public transport system in Sarawak to utilise Autonomous Rapid Transit technology.
The network is structured around three primary routes: the Blue Corridor, the Red Corridor, and the Green Corridor.
These lines are expected to form the spine of Kuching’s mobility network, connecting key areas of the city and surrounding districts.
