Sarawak Science Centre Launches, Fosters Future Innovators & Scientists

The centre aims to serve as a hub for inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators by fostering curiosity and understanding of how science can provide practical solutions to societal challenges.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg emphasised that the centre is more than a new public facility. It is a manifestation of Sarawak’s long-term vision to equip its people with the skills and knowledge needed for the industries of tomorrow.

This is not just the establishment of a science centre. It represents our journey towards the future and our determination to discover the unknown, create new knowledge and add value to the resources that we have,” said Abang Johari during the launch ceremony held in Petra Jaya.

Sarawak is endowed with vast natural resources, but the Premier highlighted that the state’s true potential lies in leveraging science and innovation to transform these resources into high-value products and solutions.

The Science Centre is designed to expose students to cutting-edge technologies and encourage them to explore careers in fields such as science, engineering, artificial intelligence, and aerospace, which are identified as strategic sectors for the region’s growth.

A notable feature of the centre is its hostel accommodation, which allows students from different parts of Sarawak to participate in various science programmes and gain practical experience through hands-on activities. This accessibility aims to broaden the reach of the centre’s educational offerings beyond urban areas.

The Premier also praised the collaborative efforts of the Sarawak Research and Development Council, the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, and other agencies and partners who contributed to the realisation of the centre.

Looking ahead, Abang Johari expressed aspirations for the Sarawak Science Centre to develop into an international platform for scientific exchange and cooperation. He envisions it welcoming researchers, educators, and innovators worldwide to collaborate on addressing global scientific and technological challenges.

The establishment of the Sarawak Science Centre aligns with broader national and regional goals, emphasising the importance of STI in driving sustainable economic progress. As countries increasingly invest in innovation ecosystems, centres like this play a vital role by nurturing local talent and fostering an innovative culture.

By providing a supportive environment for learning and exploration, the centre hopes to inspire young minds to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines, which are critical to maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global economy.

In addition to educational programmes, the centre is expected to host exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative projects that highlight the latest developments in science and technology, further positioning Sarawak as a forward-looking state ready to embrace the opportunities of the future.
