KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has announced a strategic move to enhance the financial viability of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) by introducing commercial naming rights for its stations.
The initiative was highlighted during a signing ceremony between Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd and property developer IBRACO Berhad, marking the first such partnership for the state’s new light rail project.
The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, officiated the event at the SM07 station, which will now be known as The Northbank IBRACO Art Station.
He described the agreement as more than a simple commercial transaction, framing it as a shared commitment to innovative management of public assets. The deal aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the transport network while reducing reliance on state subsidies.
According to the Premier, the implementation of KUTS is driven by a broader vision to transform urban mobility in Greater Kuching. The system is designed to provide a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicle use.
By offering a reliable public transport option, the government hopes to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions, thereby improving the overall quality of life for residents.
Abang Johari noted that successful public transportation systems around the world increasingly diversify their revenue streams. Beyond passenger fares, many operators generate income through advertising, retail leasing, property development, and station naming rights.
These commercial initiatives help strengthen the financial resilience of transport operators, allowing them to maintain high service standards without compromising affordability.

This additional revenue stream supports the state’s aspiration to provide public transportation that remains affordable, reliable, and accessible to all segments of the community.
Furthermore, Abang Johari stressed that public infrastructure should not be viewed merely as an expenditure item in the state budget. Instead, he argued that these facilities should be treated as productive assets capable of generating economic returns.
By stimulating investment and creating employment opportunities, well-managed infrastructure can contribute significantly to long-term economic growth.
