KUCHING – Sixteen foreign nationals have been taken into custody following a series of coordinated enforcement actions conducted across the greater Kuching area and Kota Samarahan. The Malaysian Immigration Department, commonly referred to as JIM Sarawak, executed these measures between the evening of 6 August and the early hours of 7 August 2026.
The targeted initiative was launched in direct response to intelligence gathering and specific complaints received from members of the public. Authorities mobilised resources for three distinct operations, identified as Ops Selera, Ops Kutip, and Ops Sapu, to address suspected breaches of national immigration regulations within the state capital and its surrounding districts.
Enforcement activities were concentrated during the night-time window, commencing at 8.00 pm and concluding at 1.00 am. This timeframe was selected to maximise the effectiveness of inspections at premises where illicit activities are frequently reported to occur after standard business hours.
Officers carried out checks at ten separate locations throughout the operation. These sites included rental accommodations, food establishments, and commercial shops that were suspected of facilitating online gambling activities. The geographical scope of the raids covered several key residential and commercial zones.
Inspections focused heavily on areas including Jalan Semarak Gita, Bandar Baru Semariang, Matang, and Kota Samarahan. These locations have previously been identified as areas requiring heightened surveillance due to recurring reports regarding foreign national compliance and unlicensed business operations.
During the course of the night, immigration officers screened a total of 51 individuals. Each person was designated as a Person Under Inspection to verify their legal status and documentation. This screening process was undertaken to ensure strict adherence to the provisions set out in the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Following thorough verification procedures, sixteen foreigners were found to be in violation of current legislation. Preliminary investigations suggest these individuals committed offences falling under Section 15(1)(c) and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, also known as Act 155.
All detained individuals were subsequently transported to the JIM office for further processing. Administrative documentation is currently being prepared, and comprehensive investigations will continue before any formal legal action is taken in accordance with existing statutory provisions.
The department has indicated that such enforcement drives will be intensified moving forward. The primary objective remains the detection and elimination of immigration law violations throughout Sarawak to uphold regulatory standards and community security.
Authorities have also issued a renewed appeal to the general public for continued cooperation. Residents are encouraged to share credible information regarding the presence of undocumented immigrants or any suspicious illegal activities in their neighbourhoods.
