SARIKEI – A significant advancement in agricultural science is currently being explored within the state, with early indicators suggesting that rice yields could reach unprecedented levels.
Officials have indicated that new cultivation methods under investigation possess the capability to generate up to 14 tonnes of produce per hectare across two growing seasons.
This development marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing campaign to bolster domestic food production and reduce reliance on imported staples.
The initiative stems from a strategic research partnership established with Yunnan University in China. This cross-border collaboration aims to introduce more productive farming technologies tailored to local conditions.
By leveraging international expertise, the state hopes to modernise its agricultural sector and address pressing concerns regarding long-term sustainability and output efficiency.
Addressing community leaders and tribal heads at a dinner event held at the Central Hall on Friday, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg highlighted the urgency of these measures.
He emphasised that global food security is becoming increasingly complex due to shifting weather patterns and environmental pressures.
“We have started working with Yunnan University to plant rice because climate change is affecting food security,” he stated during his address. The Premier noted that adapting to these environmental changes is no longer optional but essential for maintaining stable food supplies for the population.
He further elaborated on the projected output of this joint venture, underscoring the dramatic improvement over current benchmarks. “The technology being developed has the potential to produce 14 tonnes of rice per hectare for two seasons,” he explained.
Such figures represent a massive leap forward compared to traditional farming outcomes in the region. Current data indicates that many local areas typically harvest between one and three tonnes per hectare.
Achieving the targeted 14-tonne mark would therefore constitute a transformative increase in productivity. This surge in capacity is viewed as critical for meeting rising demand and insulating the local market from external supply chain disruptions.
Beyond sheer volume, the research also targets the biological characteristics of the rice plants themselves. Scientists are focusing on developing seed varieties capable of regenerating after the initial harvest.
This trait would effectively eliminate the need for conventional replanting cycles, saving both time and labour costs for farmers.
By enabling more frequent planting without the downtime associated with reseeding, land utilisation rates could improve substantially. This continuous cultivation model is expected to drive overall production volumes higher whilst making farming operations more economically viable for local growers.
Despite these advancements, the state still imports a portion of its rice requirements. Strengthening domestic output remains a top priority to achieve greater self-sufficiency. Reducing dependence on foreign sources is seen as a key component of broader economic resilience and national security strategies.
“If we have new technology, even if we collaborate with foreign universities, we can increase our food production,” the Premier asserted. He stressed that embracing external knowledge is a pragmatic approach to solving internal challenges and securing the state’s nutritional future.
He added that integrating scientific innovation into the agricultural framework is essential for economic diversification. “We must use knowledge and technology to produce food and strengthen our economic sector,” he said. This perspective frames agriculture not merely as subsistence farming but as a high-value industrial pillar.
Success in this modernised sector will depend heavily on human capital development. There is a recognised need for younger generations to acquire specialised skills in biology, soil management, and agricultural technology. Without a workforce proficient in these areas, the adoption of advanced systems may face implementation hurdles.
Mastery of these technical disciplines offers benefits beyond increased crop yields. It creates pathways for establishing downstream industries and manufacturing high-value derivative products.
