SARIKEI – Plans are underway to enhance Tanjung Manis Airport in a move aimed at boosting tourism in the Sarikei Division, with the potential to attract more international visitors to the region’s distinctive destinations.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg revealed that one of the key proposals involves extending the airport’s runway to accommodate larger aircraft. This upgrade is expected to improve accessibility and open new opportunities for tourism growth.
“Our development focus for tourism is in the Belawai area because it has a lot of potential and there is also an airport in Tanjung Manis which we will extend to allow aircraft to land there. When the facilities are improved, the tourism industry we are focusing on can spill over to other areas in Sarikei Division,” he said during a press conference following the Sarawakku Sayang Sarikei Division Programme on Saturday.
The Premier explained that improved flight facilities would provide wider access to tourism hotspots such as Belawai, while also creating economic spillovers across the division. He stressed that tourism development must highlight the uniqueness of local attractions and be supported by suitable accommodation to draw international travellers.
He pointed to Sabah’s experience, where tourists from countries including South Korea and Japan often seek out destinations beyond the main attractions. Abang Johari suggested that Sarikei could adopt a similar approach by positioning Belawai and surrounding areas as complementary destinations for visitors arriving in Sarawak.
“They may not only see the main tourist areas, but can go see the unique attractions in this area,” he added, noting that diversification of tourism offerings would strengthen Sarawak’s appeal to global travellers.
The Premier outlined that the development plan for the period 2026 to 2030 is expected to generate new economic activities in Sarikei, benefiting both local communities and businesses. He emphasised that strategic infrastructure and improved access facilities are essential foundations for unlocking Sarikei’s economic potential.
The airport enhancement is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to balance infrastructure development with tourism growth. By investing in facilities that support international connectivity, the state aims to ensure that Sarikei’s attractions are more accessible to a wider audience.
Belawai, known for its coastal charm and natural beauty, has been identified as a focal point for tourism expansion. With better connectivity through Tanjung Manis Airport, the area could see increased visitor numbers, supporting local enterprises and creating new opportunities for residents.
The Premier’s remarks highlight Sarawak’s commitment to diversifying its economy by leveraging tourism alongside other sectors. The initiative reflects a long-term vision to strengthen resilience, encourage sustainable growth, and ensure that Sarikei plays a more prominent role in the state’s overall development.
