KUCHING: The Mayor’s Walk 2026, scheduled to take place this Sunday, August 16, has been postponed due to the current haze conditions affecting Kuching.
Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS) announced the postponement on Friday (August 14), saying the decision was made in the interest of the health and safety of participants, volunteers, officials and members of the public.
The event was originally scheduled to begin at 6am on Sunday. However, the current air quality conditions have raised health concerns, particularly for those who would be taking part in the outdoor activity.
MBKS said the new date for the Mayor’s Walk 2026 would be announced at a later date.
The postponement is expected to affect many registered participants who had made preparations for the event, including collecting their official Mayor’s Walk 2026 T-shirts.
Participants who have already collected their T-shirts have been advised to keep them safely. MBKS said the T-shirts would still be required during the Mayor’s Walk when the event is held on the new date.
The city council also expressed its apology for any inconvenience caused by the postponement.
At the same time, MBKS thanked all registered participants, sponsors, partners and members of the public for their understanding and continued support for the event.
The decision comes as haze conditions remain a concern in Kuching, where outdoor activities can pose additional health risks when air quality deteriorates. Organisers are expected to continue monitoring the situation before deciding on a suitable replacement date.
The Mayor’s Walk is among the community activities aimed at encouraging residents to stay active while bringing members of the public together in a city-wide event.
With the postponement, participants are advised to wait for the official announcement from MBKS regarding the new date and further arrangements.
MBKS has not announced a replacement date as of August 14.
The postponement also serves as a reminder for members of the public to take air quality conditions seriously, especially when planning outdoor activities. Participants with health concerns are encouraged to monitor official air quality information and take appropriate precautions.
