ASAJAYA – A grass fire that ignited in a coastal farming area of Asajaya district on Monday afternoon was completely put out by the complainant before fire engines could reach the scene.
The incident took place at Jalan Kampung Jemukan in Sadong Jaya, where an estimated 0.5 acres of dry grass and undergrowth were affected.
Firefighters from the Asajaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Asajaya) received the emergency call on 10 August 2026 and immediately scrambled a light fire rescue tender (LFRT Atego) bearing registration number BJU 5996.
The response team was led by Operations Commander PBK I Abg Othman Bin Abg Sharbini, who oversaw the deployment.
Upon arrival, however, the crew discovered that active flames had already been extinguished.
The individual who first alerted authorities had taken it upon themselves to suppress the fire, eliminating the need for direct intervention by the professional firefighters.
After a meticulous inspection of the burn site to confirm there were no lingering hotspots or risks of reignition, the Bravo Team from BBP Asajaya declared the area secure.
The operatives then returned to their station, with no injuries or property damage reported.
In the subsequent operational summary, the team concluded their message with the phrase, “Greetings Civilized Malaysia,” a warm reflection of the department’s community spirit.
While the cause of the fire remains undetermined, the incident underscores the heightened risk of vegetation fires during dry spells commonly experienced in this part of Sarawak.
The district of Asajaya, located east of Kuching, includes numerous villages and farmland where parched grass can easily catch fire from discarded cigarette butts, unattended agricultural burning, or natural causes.
Authorities frequently remind residents that even a small, seemingly controlled fire can quickly get out of hand in windy conditions and dry weather.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) advises the public to maintain clear boundaries around properties, refrain from open burning without permits, and report any fire immediately to the nearest station.
The LFRT Atego deployed in this response is specifically designed for swift mobility in semi-rural environments, allowing crews to reach remote locations like Sadong Jaya without delay.
Despite the swift response on Monday, the proactive action of the complainant meant that the fire engine’s crew did not need to use any water or equipment to combat the flames.
Instead, their role focused on post-fire assessment and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area, including nearby homes and fields.
The successful outcome without the need for firefighting intervention highlights the value of community awareness and individual initiative.
