KUCHING, Aug 30 — A contractor tragically lost his life during a cable installation project on a hill in Kampung Kuang, Siburan, after experiencing breathing difficulties. The 53-year-old man was identified as Siva A/L Sundram from Ipoh, Perak.
The incident occurred on August 29, with the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) receiving an emergency call at 3:40 pm. Upon receiving the alert, a team from the Siburan Fire Station was dispatched to the location immediately.
According to a statement by Bomba Sarawak, the response team included personnel from various agencies. “Upon arrival, the operation commander was informed that a contractor involved in cable installation had experienced difficulty breathing,” the statement read.
The rescue effort was not easy, as the team had to navigate challenging terrain. “The rescue team, consisting of six personnel from the Simpok Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS Simpok), eight contractors from Sarawak Energy, and several local villagers, embarked on a challenging six-kilometre trek to reach the location, navigating steep and rugged terrain.”
The rescue team faced a tough task, trekking through steep hills and dense vegetation to reach the stricken contractor. Despite their swift and coordinated efforts, the remote and rough terrain added significant challenges to the operation. Upon reaching the victim, the operation commander assessed the situation and found the man unconscious.
Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel immediately initiated CPR upon finding the contractor, but he showed no signs of life. Efforts to revive him continued for several minutes, highlighting the critical nature of the situation. Despite the dedicated attempts by the rescue team, the man’s condition did not improve.
The team then carefully transported the victim down the hill using a stretcher, ensuring his safety during the descent despite the difficult path. Upon reaching the base, medical personnel from the Ministry of Health (KKM) were present to examine the victim. Tragically, it was confirmed that Siva A/L Sundram had passed away.
The operation concluded at 6:26 pm after the victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action.
The coordinated response involved multiple agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) with three personnel, the Ministry of Health with three personnel, and the Simpok Volunteer Fire Brigade with six personnel. Each team played a critical role in the rescue and recovery operation, working together under challenging conditions to ensure a thorough and respectful handling of the tragic incident.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in remote installations and the need for adequate safety measures. Cable installation on steep and rugged terrain, such as the hills of Kampung Kuang, requires careful planning and immediate access to medical support to address emergencies that may arise.
The safety of workers, particularly in hazardous environments, must remain a top priority. Employers and contractors are urged to reassess their emergency preparedness and ensure that teams are equipped with the necessary training and equipment to handle health crises in remote locations.
