KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 12): In a historic and heartwarming move, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has granted a royal pardon to the first Malaysian prisoner to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) while serving time in prison. The pardon, announced yesterday in conjunction with the Sultan’s birthday, marks a significant milestone in the journey of rehabilitation and education.
The Prisons Department confirmed the release of Murad (name changed), who had been incarcerated since 2001. At just 14 years old, he was detained under the Tahanan Limpah Sultan (TLS) programme at the Kajang Prison Drug Rehabilitation Centre. Despite the challenges, Murad persevered and successfully completed his PhD in Business Administration while in custody.
The release warrant was officially read by Kajang Prison director Preshahdin Monshee. During the announcement, Preshahdin emphasised the importance of discipline and continuous self-improvement, extending the department’s support to Murad as he reintegrates into society.
Murad expressed his profound gratitude to the Sultan of Selangor for the royal pardon and to the Prisons Department for facilitating his educational journey. “This opportunity has transformed my life. I am committed to using my knowledge to contribute positively to society,” he said.
