KUCHING (Dec 19): A 41-year-old man lost his life in a tragic crocodile attack at Kampung Sampun Tebun, Asajaya, earlier today.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported receiving an emergency call at 4.42pm, alerting them to the distressing incident. A swift response was initiated, with personnel from the Asajaya station immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon their arrival, the team confirmed the unfortunate demise of the victim, identified as Gindek Julau.
The victim’s remains were discovered in the waters of Sungai Sampun by his elder brother around 4.30pm. Authorities believe the attack occurred shortly before the grim discovery.
“The victim’s remains were handed over to the police for further action,” Bomba said in a statement.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by crocodiles in Sarawak’s rivers. Kampung Sampun Tebun is among several areas known for its proximity to crocodile habitats, raising concerns about human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
Authorities urge residents to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and to report sightings of crocodiles to the relevant agencies. Collaborative efforts between the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), local communities, and other stakeholders are crucial to mitigating such tragic incidents.
