Child Among 16 Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Miri Immigration Ops

MIRI (Dec 23): A child was among 16 individuals arrested by the Immigration Department during a series of operations under Ops Selera/Ops Sapu last week. The targeted areas included rental houses, food premises, and shared housing facilities at construction sites in the city centre, Krokop, and Taman Tunku.

According to a statement shared on the Immigration Department’s official Facebook page, 25 individuals were inspected during the operation, resulting in the arrest of 16 foreign nationals.

The highest number of arrests occurred at a shared housing facility in Taman Tunku, where 11 individuals were detained. Among those arrested, violations included lacking valid travel documents, overstaying their permitted duration in Malaysia, and not possessing valid passes for residence.

These offences contravene Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In addition, one individual was issued a notice to appear and provide a statement to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The Immigration Department emphasised the importance of community involvement in tackling illegal immigration. Members of the public with information on illegal immigrants are urged to report to the nearest Immigration office or use the department’s online complaint platform.

This operation underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that immigration laws are upheld while maintaining safety and security across the nation.
