Lorry Driver Fined RM4,000 for Threatening Baby Shima in Sibu

Lorry Driver Fined RM4,000 for Threatening Baby Shima in Sibu

SIBU (Jan 3): A lorry driver has been fined RM4,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here today after pleading guilty to threatening popular Malaysian singer Nor Ashima Ramli, better known as Baby Shima, on social media.

The accused, 35-year-old Mel Maxpherson Munded, was sentenced under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. The section carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Mel, who was unrepresented, admitted to making the threatening comments while under the influence of alcohol on Dec 30. The post read, “Lagi u masuk Sarawak!! Hati-hati your enemy m u sudah. Jangan pulang melaya dengan mayat saja!! Take care baby shima.”

The singer discovered the disturbing comment while at a hotel in Sibu around 11pm. Alarmed by the threat, she promptly filed a police report, leading to Mel’s arrest on Dec 31 at 9.15pm at the Kota Sentosa police station.

During court proceedings, Mel pleaded for leniency, citing that it was his first offence and that he is the sole breadwinner of his family, which includes caring for his elderly mother.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern considered Mel’s plea of guilt, his mitigation factors, and the seriousness of the offence before passing the sentence. Mel avoided jail time after settling the RM4,000 fine on the spot.

Prosecuting officer Siti Mariyah Dahari presented the case on behalf of the prosecution.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences of making threats online, even under the influence, as well as the importance of practicing caution and respect on social media platforms.
