SELANGAU, Jan 4 — A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been launched to locate two men who went missing while foraging for frogs in a forest near Rumah Penggang, Batu 36 Tamin.
The Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief, Andy Alie, revealed that the department received the distress call at approximately 11:20 am today.
“A team was immediately dispatched to the site to gather initial information before initiating the SAR operation,” said Andy.
The missing individuals, identified as Stephen Meron, 51, and Rowney Lau Siew Kiong, 44, had ventured into the forest on Thursday evening (Jan 2) with two other relatives.
The group reportedly split into two teams during their frog-hunting expedition. While the complainant and another relative managed to find their way out of the forest, Stephen and Rowney remain unaccounted for.
Family members, who had been searching for the men since their disappearance, filed a police report after their own efforts proved fruitless.
Andy pointed out that adverse weather conditions and the forest’s thick, challenging terrain are among the main obstacles faced by the SAR team. Nevertheless, the rescuers are determined, working closely with local residents familiar with the area.
“We urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in locating the victims. Every bit of help counts in expediting the search process,” he said.
Local authorities encourage residents to remain vigilant and offer any assistance possible to ensure the safe return of the two men. The SAR operation will continue until further updates are available.
