DARO (Jan 9): The much-anticipated 2.43km Muara Lassa Bridge, Sarawak’s second-longest bridge, is now officially open to the public. The bridge, a key milestone in the state’s infrastructure development, marks another achievement by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, announced the completion of the bridge during a pre-launch ceremony. Representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, he expressed his gratitude for the smooth construction process, which took 48 months to complete.
“This bridge is not only a symbol of connectivity but also a testament to high-quality construction and efficient planning,” Aidel said.
He also shared that a two-lane road linking the bridge to Daro town has been approved and will soon be constructed, further enhancing accessibility for residents and travelers.
The Muara Lassa Bridge is one of 16 bridges constructed under Sarawak’s coastal and second trunk road projects. These projects aim to transform the state’s connectivity and boost its economic development.
Datuk Aidel highlighted the RM12 billion cost of the coastal roads and bridges, fully funded by the Sarawak government through alternative financing methods. He credited the wisdom of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for adopting this approach, which accelerated progress significantly.
“If we had followed conventional financing methods, many of these projects might still be pending,” Aidel remarked.
In addition to the Muara Lassa Bridge, several other bridges are set for completion this year, including the Bintulu-Jepak Bridge in February and the Pasi Bridge in March. Overall, the coastal road project has reached 80% completion, while the second trunk road stands at nearly 30%.
The official opening ceremony of the Muara Lassa Bridge by the Premier is scheduled for February 22.
Notable attendees at the event included Deputy Minister of Corporate Affairs Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi, Tanjung Manis MP Yusuf Abd Wahab, Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad, and Sarawak Public Works Department director Ir Dr Cassidy Morris.
