Lanterns Light Up Poh Kwong Park for Lunar New Year Celebration

KUCHING (Jan 14): The vibrant glow of festive lanterns illuminated the Hexagonal Pavilion at Poh Kwong Park last night as Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated the much-anticipated lantern lighting ceremony.

The annual event, which highlights unity and joy among the local community, drew a lively crowd eager to welcome the Lunar New Year with traditional flair and cultural pride.

In his speech, Dr Sim emphasised the remarkable transformation Sarawak has achieved over the past decade, underscoring the state’s rise as a beacon of hope and progress.

“Sarawak today is vastly different from 10 years ago. Where others once underestimated us, they now look to Sarawak with admiration and hope,” he said.

Dr Sim attributed the state’s success to its political stability, economic resilience, and the unity of its people. He also pointed out Sarawak’s growing economic potential, citing its RM15.8 billion annual revenue—a figure equivalent to five years of Selangor’s revenue.

“Unity is the foundation of Sarawak’s success. It creates opportunities for economic growth and a better future. With determination and hard work, Sarawak will not only catch up but surpass expectations,” he added, reaffirming the state government’s vision to achieve greater heights by 2030.

Adding to the festive cheer, a captivating lion dance performance thrilled the audience, symbolising prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.

The lantern lighting tradition remains a cherished part of Sarawak’s Lunar New Year celebrations, bringing together people from all walks of life to honour the spirit of togetherness.

As the glowing lanterns lit up the night sky, the event served as a beautiful reminder of Sarawak’s unity and bright future.
