MARUDI, Jan 17 – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg showcased a personal touch in celebrating a landmark achievement, riding a police motorcycle across the newly completed Marudi Bridge. This RM116.5 million engineering marvel spans 650 metres over Batang Baram, symbolising a new era of connectivity for the region.
The Marudi Bridge project, launched in October 2022, reached completion on November 10, 2024, seven months ahead of schedule. The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), alongside contractors and consultants, played a pivotal role in this success.
“This bridge is marvellous, and the scenery is breathtaking. It’s a proud moment for Sarawak and its people,” said Abang Johari during the inauguration ceremony, which was broadcast live on Ukas Channel.
The Premier shared his enthusiasm, even jokingly mentioning how he had to prove his bike license to the police before the ride. The bridge has reduced travel time between Miri and Marudi to just one hour, eliminating the need for ferry crossings and improving access to essential services.
A Promise Fulfilled
Reflecting on the past, Abang Johari recalled the challenges faced by Marudi residents, who once endured poor accessibility. “When I became Premier, I made it my mission to bridge this gap. Today, we’ve made that vision a reality,” he stated.
He also highlighted Marudi’s potential for growth, emphasising modern agriculture, tourism, and the region’s cultural heritage. The Marudi Bridge is part of the Sarawak government’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, aimed at sustainable and inclusive development.
Connecting Sarawak to a Brighter Future
The Marudi Bridge joins Sarawak’s expanding infrastructure network, which includes the recently opened Muara Lassa Bridge. Together, these projects enhance connectivity within Miri, Marudi, Limbang, Lawas, and Mulu, while linking the region to Brunei and Sabah.
With improved access to education, healthcare, and iconic sites like Mulu National Park, the bridge is set to boost socio-economic growth and unlock the region’s economic potential.
This monumental achievement was celebrated by several dignitaries, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, alongside other state leaders.
The Marudi Bridge is not just an infrastructural feat but a symbol of progress, unity, and a brighter future for Sarawak.
