KUCHING (Jan 29) – The Miri Disaster Management Operations Room has been activated to coordinate emergency response efforts following multiple landslides and floods in the district, Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin announced today.
“Heavy rainfall since Tuesday has triggered several landslides in Miri, including one near my residential area,” he said.
The operations room, which began functioning today (Jan 29), will operate 24 hours a day to manage disaster response and aid affected residents.
Lee made this announcement while attending the State-level Chinese New Year Open House at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), where he was met by reporters. The event was graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, alongside Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was in charge of the event, was also present.
Landslide Tragedy in Kampung Lereng Bukit
Earlier this morning, a devastating landslide in Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri, destroyed two houses, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least four individuals. Rescuers are still searching for the final victim trapped beneath the rubble.
Miri Floods: Authorities on High Alert
On the flood situation in Miri, Lee reassured the public that while conditions are not severe, authorities remain on high alert.
“The committee is currently focusing on high-risk areas,” he stated.
Relevant agencies, including the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Public Works Department (JKR), and Miri City Council, are visiting affected areas to assess the situation and determine necessary assistance for those impacted by the floods and landslides.
As heavy rains persist, residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories issued by the authorities.
