KUCHING (Jan 29): Federal and Sarawak government agencies are working hand in hand to manage the flood crisis in Bintulu, which has taken many by surprise due to its unusual occurrence in the area.
Federal Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, expressed his concern over the unexpected floods and called for immediate action from all relevant authorities.
“Bintulu is now experiencing floods, which is unusual. Therefore, I urge all relevant agencies to step forward and take immediate action to manage the situation,” he said.
Ugak made this statement during the 2025 Sarawak-level Chinese New Year (CNY) Open House, held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Rapid Response Needed to Aid Flood Victims
The deputy minister stressed the importance of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) taking swift measures to alleviate the impact of the floods, particularly in heavily affected areas.
“In the LNG area of Bintulu, many places are now submerged. Apart from that, my parliamentary constituency (Hulu Rajang), especially in the Murum state constituency, has also been affected by floods,” he added.
Various government agencies, including the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), have been mobilised to provide immediate assistance to affected residents.
Cut-Off Villages Receive Emergency Aid
Ugak also highlighted that several areas in his constituency, including Ulu Tubau and Ulu Jelalong, have been cut off due to rising floodwaters.
“The residents of Ulu Tubau have contacted me to inform me about the current situation. I was told that the Social Welfare Department (JKM) has sent essential supplies to ensure that affected residents receive assistance as soon as possible,” he said.
Due to impassable land routes, aid deliveries are being conducted by boat. Ugak has also directed village chiefs from his service centre to assess the situation and collaborate with JKM to ensure that residents receive food and essential supplies without delay.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that all affected communities receive the necessary assistance.
