KUCHING, Jan 31 – The number of flood victims in Sarawak has now surpassed 10,000, forcing more families to seek shelter in temporary evacuation centres.
According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), as of 7pm today, a total of 10,950 victims from 3,096 families have been relocated to 59 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) across the state.
Bintulu remains the most affected district, with 5,350 people forced to leave their homes due to rising floodwaters. Other affected areas include:
- Serian: 2,254 evacuees
- Samarahan: 1,246 evacuees
- Sibu: 1,017 evacuees
- Miri: 608 evacuees
- Kuching: 475 evacuees
Aside from flooding, landslides have also displaced 169 people in Miri and Bintulu. Authorities have relocated them to designated PPS to ensure their safety.
In addition to flood and landslide evacuees, 37 fire victims from Rumah Paulus Yan in Bawan Kanowit have been moved to a newly opened PPS at Dewan Datuk Aaron.
SDMC continues to monitor the situation closely as heavy rains persist in several areas. Rescue teams, including the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), are actively assisting victims and ensuring their safety.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay alert and follow evacuation orders if necessary. The government urges the public to stay updated with official announcements and avoid traveling through flooded roads for safety reasons.
