KUCHING (Feb 6): The number of flood evacuees at temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Sarawak has gradually decreased, but slight increases were reported in the Sibu, Mukah, and Bintulu divisions.
According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the total number of evacuees dropped from 4,520 at 4pm to 4,341 at 8pm across 24 active PPS statewide.
However, Sibu, Mukah, and Bintulu experienced a slight rise in the number of evacuees due to continuous rainfall affecting certain low-lying areas.
In Sibu, Kompleks Sukan Kanowit PPS saw an increase from 171 evacuees at 4pm to 178 at 8pm. Meanwhile, SJK (C) Tong Ah PPS recorded a rise from 475 to 481 evacuees, sheltering residents from several longhouses, including Rumah Chandu, Rumah Layang, and Rumah Magdeline.
At SK Bukit Arip PPS, the number climbed from 142 to 149, housing evacuees from Rumah Janting, Rumah Jambai, and Sungai Arip Health Clinic.
In Mukah, Dewan Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Mukah PPS saw a significant increase from 97 to 149 evacuees. Similarly, Stadium Perpaduan Dalat PPS recorded a slight rise from 165 to 166 evacuees from Kampung Medong Hulu and Kampung Medong Hilir.
Bintulu remains the worst affected division, with its number of evacuees rising from 1,566 to 1,612. Dewan Suarah Bintulu PPS saw an increase from 614 to 625 evacuees, while SMK Tatau PPS recorded a jump from 355 to 419 evacuees.
As of 8pm, Bintulu Division has the highest number of evacuees at 1,612, followed by Sibu with 1,173 and Miri with 917. Despite the slight increases in certain areas, 60 PPS have been closed as conditions improve in other parts of Sarawak.
