The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Serian District Treatment and Rehabilitation Unit recently concluded a specialised short-term course focused on modern fertigation systems, aiming to provide a sustainable path toward economic independence.

The workshop was specifically designed for Phase 4 clients of the AADK. This particular stage of recovery focuses on community reintegration and the development of practical life skills.

By introducing participants to modern farming, the agency hopes to foster a sense of purpose and provide the tools necessary for stable employment following their supervision period.

Technical expertise for the programme was provided by the Serian Fertigation and Hydroponics Association.

Two prominent members of the association, Mr Dontus Anak Dominic and Mr Hillary Anak Albert, led the instructional sessions.

They provided comprehensive briefings and hands-on training, ensuring that participants understood the nuances of nutrient delivery and water management inherent in fertigation.

Fertigation is a method that combines irrigation with the application of fertilisers. It is increasingly popular in Sarawak due to its efficiency in water usage and its ability to produce high-yield crops in smaller spaces.

For those in recovery, this type of “smart farming” represents a low-barrier entry point into the agricultural market, requiring less physical labour than traditional tilling while offering higher technical rewards.

The primary objective of the course was to ignite a genuine interest in modern agriculture. Beyond the technicalities of hydroponics, the programme highlighted the potential for income generation.

By mastering these contemporary techniques, clients are better positioned to improve their quality of life and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.

Community leaders have noted that such initiatives are vital for reducing recidivism. By engaging in productive economic activities, individuals are less likely to return to previous harmful patterns.

This programme serves as a bridge between clinical rehabilitation and active citizenship, focusing on the future rather than the past.

Organisers expressed optimism that the practical skills acquired will help participants build a more positive outlook.

The integration of modern technology with traditional farming values allows for a dignified transition back into the workforce.

As Serian continues to develop its agricultural sector, these newly trained individuals could play a key role in the district’s food security and economic growth.
