SIBU – The United Bumiputera Party (PBB) has been urged to prioritise the mastery of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to secure Sarawak’s future competitiveness.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari emphasised that adapting to rapid technological shifts is no longer optional but essential for sustained state development.
Speaking at the Central Zone PBB Special Assembly held at the Sibu Indoor Stadium on Saturday, the Premier highlighted the transformative impact of global technological advancements.
He noted that modern workflows increasingly rely on digital tools, making it imperative for political organisations to evolve alongside these changes.
“The world has changed. Today’s humans are no longer able to work alone without the help of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Therefore, the PBB must accept and master digital technology to ensure Sarawak continues to progress,” he stated.
As the Yang di-Pertua of PBB and a key figure in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, Dr Abang Jo reflected on the party’s track record. He pointed out that PBB, along with its component parties, has successfully delivered tangible development projects that benefit citizens across all demographics.
The government’s approach, he argued, focuses on implementation rather than mere promises, evident in the construction of infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and rural facilities.
The Premier drew specific attention to the transformation of the Central Zone, particularly Kapit. Once regarded as a remote area, Kapit is now undergoing significant modernisation through strategic infrastructure projects and sustainable urban planning.
To support this vision, Sarawak officials were sent to Norway to study best practices in environmentally friendly urban development, aiming to replicate those standards in Kapit.
Regional development agencies have played a pivotal role in accelerating progress in rural areas. The Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA) and the Mid Rajang Development Agency (MiRRDA) have facilitated numerous projects, while the replacement of ferry services with bridges has enhanced mobility and stimulated local economic growth.
These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to inclusive development, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.
Looking ahead to 2030, Sarawak is positioning itself to navigate the changing global economic landscape by focusing on renewable energy, the green economy, and high-tech industries.
The state’s abundant hydro resources, natural gas reserves, and potential for green energy production provide a competitive edge in attracting high-quality international investments.
Dr Abang Jo also highlighted Sarawak’s growing influence at the federal level, particularly in energy and infrastructure sectors. This presence, he noted, demonstrates the credibility of PBB’s leadership beyond state borders.
On the critical issue of oil and gas, he reaffirmed the state’s stance on defending its rights as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Strategic sectors such as semiconductors, the digital economy, green hydrogen, and renewable energy are gaining traction among global investors.
The Premier stressed that PBB leaders and members must continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge to keep pace with these developments. He called for a spirit of sacrifice and unity within the party to maintain its strength as the backbone of GPS.
The assembly served as a platform to reinforce the importance of leadership continuity and internal cohesion. By embracing digital innovation and maintaining a unified front, PBB aims to ensure that Sarawak remains resilient and prosperous in an increasingly complex global environment.
